Who Watches The Watchmen?

The new trailer for The Watchmen is said to be premiering this weekend before the new Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, and if I didn't want to see Solace before, I'd almost go anyway JUST to see this trailer on the big screen.

I know that most of you know me as a drop-dead, heart-stopping stud, but the little known fact remains that I am also a comic book nerd. You can thank Earl for the the second part of that sentence. You can thank mother nature for the first part.

Anyway, the comic book "The Watchmen" is pretty much considered the holy grail of comics. Most collectors consider it the best comic book story of all time (not me, however. While i LOVE this story, I'd have to tip my hat to Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight" as the best ever..... Watchmen would follow a close 2nd.)

The book is 20 years old now, and the attempts that various directors have had to get it made into a movie over the past 2 decades are now almost legendary. From creative differences, to exorbitant budget overruns, film attempt after film attempt have been scrapped and the project has gotten abandoned more times than i can count (admittedly, i cant count past 3).

Anyway, in steps Zack Snyder, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors ever. Everything he touches is just grand-slammed right out of the park for me.

The first trailer, released a few months ago, had me very excited.

THIS new one makes me have an accident in my pants (which, ALSO admittedly, isn't that hard either).

March 9th CANNOT come fast enough.....

This was the first graphic novel I've ever read and I loved it. Now how can anything else ever come close? This trailer looks awesome. I can't wait.

Between living in Italy and having three young kids, I rarely get to see a movie before it's up for the Oscars. But, when I eventually see the Watchmem, I'll remember what you said.

Well, I can say this.

I am finding that comic books are a lot like blue grass music. (which is one of my main passions)

Seemingly very simple and prone to stereotypes, they express the deepest of things that run underneath us all.

And it is done in such a simplistic manner, that until you take a moment and really, really look and listen, you never really see all those bugs underneath the rock.

So creepy the more you sink into it really. And all the costumes, the stylistic direction, the fiddles, the southern drawl, all of that fades and it becomes so achingly real.It is so creepy how it is both misdirection and a neon sign for the blantant truth, all at the same time.

Or, perhaps I am thinking too deeply about the whole deal.

would not be the first time.

And again, I ask, anyone a fan of Concrete?

Or she hulk?

just curious for my own research purposes.

I had never heard of Watchmen before this post. But I can't wait to see the new Bond when it opens here this week.

Well I guess I got gypped. I saw the new Bond movie (I'll save the suspense; it was remarkably an unremarkable movie, Casino Royal is still the high mark in recent Bond movies.) So the movie wasn't worth it, and I didn't get a Watchmen Trailer either. I want my money back.

she hulk i was a fan of during her first run back in the 70's. i have all those issues. the 2nd series in the 90's i never got into, nor the current one, but i always liked the character.

I guess my interest in She-Hulk is because I read a really good review of it in the Onion AV club.

Just curious I guess. No energy to go and buy such things, but hmm

And I think that the concrete interest is well, hard to explain but well, it always looked cool.

and yeah, no need to comment on the other part of the comment ;)

just kidding

Well, you know how crazy I am about Watchmen so I almost don't need to comment.

Except to call you a nancy-boy for proclaiming Zack Snyder the new Scorcese on the basis of 2 films and some Morrissey music videos. C'mon! The potential for letdown, especially with Watchmen, is HUGE! Let's let the guy get a few more films under his belt, shall we?

I like the Watchmen book but the trailer here didn't really do it for me. I didn't love 300 and both movies apparently have the same director.

By the way, the original source of the "Who will watch the watchmen" quote is the Roman satirist Juvenal, a pretty obscure literary figure about whom I chose to write my dissertation in grad school.

Bruce said...

I am not so sure about the director. I saw 300 and while overly stylized and graphic, it wasn't all that great, unless you are gay, or like a lot of gore. This all seems to be part of the new 'hip' director movement in Hollywood where they take cutting edge CGI and use it to create stylized worlds, which sort of approachs live action video games. What ever happened to 'McG' or J.J. Abrams? I don't they they will have the staying power of Robert Wise or William Wyler.

Although I am sure it will be an entertaining film....if I ever watch it.
