Say “Hi” To Your Mother For Me

About the only thing that DIDN’T completely suck about the last week of my life was that my company gave me a full week off.

I spent most of that time dealing with family stuff, of course, but there was still a lot of “down time”, where I really had nothing of note to do.

So, to take my mind off things, I decided to watch movies. A LOT of movies. I’m honestly sitting here trying to remember all the ones that I watched, and I can’t even remember them all. I think that’s because many of them I watched through a “I can’t believe this has happened” daze, but it might also be because a few of them downright sucked. See if you can guess which ones didn’t cut the mustard….

I watched American Gangster, The Manchurian Candidate, Iron Man, Night of the Demons, Night of the Demons 2, Night of the Demons III, Motel Hell, Doomsday.

I then capped off the week with a movie that at the start of the summer I had mentioned that I really wanted to seeThe Happening.

I usually love M. Night. Shamalamadingdong’s work, and I usually like Mark Wahlburg so I figured this would be a slam dunk.

Then the movie opened, and people were saying it was the worst movie of the summer. The reviews were absolutely scathing.

Now that I’ve finally seen it, I have to say that It was NOT a great movie, but I didn’t mind it as much as most others did. Maybe it’s because I just love watching “end of the world” type movies, but I really thought that there was a good movie in there somewhere.

But Wahlburg’s performance? Oh my God… it was horrendous. I mean historically bad. I mean that one day college kids will make up a drinking game where they will take a drink every time Mark Wahlburg displays a bout of shitty acting. Such a shame.

But watching The Happening got me to think about last week’s Saturday Night Live, which FINALLY put forth a decent episode with host Anne Hathaway.

Earl has already talked about what was easily the best skit of the night, but I honestly found myself laughing harder at the one below, which pokes fun at the aforementioned Marky Mark. Andy Samburg continues to be the best part of the new SNL, and his impression of Wahlburg is so dead-on its scary.

Enjoy!

Shamalamadingdong? Har! I was a bit disenchanted with The Village and I haven't seen The Happening yet, but I plan to have plenty of drinks ready when I do. Thanks for the heads up!

Oh, I like Marky Mark and I have to admit that I liked the Happening and so did everyone who went to the movie with us. Although I'm not sure that I will ever watch it again. I think it is one of those movies that is so disturbing that you watch it once and then you have no desire to watch it again.

As for your taste in movies I LOVE scary movies too! My husband won't watch them I have to wait until he is on a business trip and then have a scary movie marathon by myself.

Movies, whether good or bad, are a great escape and therefore, a great way to way to help deal with the loss of a loved one. That was nice of your company to give you so much time off to be with family and I'm glad you got to catch up on a lot of movies. I like reading what you think. I still have to see some of those though. But it never gets spoiled for me because I usually forget what everyone has said about a movie buy the time I see it. There are some good points about a bad memory after all. LOL. ;)

I'll take Transformers over Iron Man, but Manchurion Candidate was awesome. How evil can Meryl Streep be?

Marky Mark... hehehe... we used to have a local TV presenter called Scott Scott. For real. Cruel parents, I guess.

Really? I thought Marky Mark did a good job. And I majored in theater for two semesters, so I think my opinion carries more weight than yours. ;) The SNL skit was AWESOME. As for the Happening...it was total CRAP. Shamalamadindong should stick to his formula of "where the hell did that come from" plot twists. Trees killing people?! LAME.

His movies always have a great premise, but get lost along the way. The guy needs an editor!

My word that guy really, really does sound and act just like Wahlberg. Scary.

Man, what is up with Night of the Demons...I would think by #2 you would have learned your lesson. American Gangster was a disappointment for me, although the Manchruian Candidate is always good (the original with Frank Sinatra, not the shitty remake).

Very interesting blog you have! Thanks for visiting me.
Hey I love the Manchurian Candidate and the remake wasn't to bad either.
I saw the Happening when it first came out and it was OK. Not his worse but not his best either. I think his best had to be "Signs".
Now Whalberg...
he has gotten better as an actor for me over the years but I think he is better in high action movies, to me he was not believable in this movie.
