This Is As Much As You're Ever Gonna Get

A friend of mine, who happens to read this blog, asked me the other day:

"Hey, why don't you post more often? I notice that you've been getting more and more readers lately. You would probably get even more if you posted at least once a day"

That's a nice thought, and I'd love to accommodate him, but that's just NEVER going to happen here.

The truth is, aside from belittling brain-dead sales persons and being molested by horny therapists, i just don't have enough that goes on in my day-to-day life that would fill up that amount of posting.

For me to post daily, i would be inundating you all with posts about what i did at work, what i had for breakfast, or what i watched on TV that night.

Would any of you WANT to read that kinda stuff? I really can't see that being the case. I know i certainly wouldn't have much fun WRITING those kinds of posts.

And yet, there are THOUSANDS of blogs out there in the cyberworld that do just that. I am constantly amazed at the amount of blogs i check out that contain post after post of "Woke up early today. Had eggs and toast for breakfast. Little Timmy had a runny nose."

Wow, THAT'LL keep me coming back first thing every day, won't it?

Blogs like that have of late been stuck with the name "Mommy Blogs", which i think is an unfair nomenclature. Some of the blogs i have up on my blogroll could certainly be lumped into the Mommy Blog category, but each one of them brings something special to the table with every post, or else i wouldn't be telling people to check 'em out. They may deal primarily with day to day life, but they are far from "mundane", so i enjoy reading them.

Where the Hell am i going with all this? I seem to have gotten a bit off track...

What it boils down to is, for me, I can never envision myself putting more than 2 -3 posts a week up on this site. When I started this blog 3 years ago, I used to put up a new story every 1-2 weeks, so if i can keep things fresh and interesting at my current pace, I'm gonna consider it a huge "win".

Bottom line is, I will never put up a post that i myself wouldn't want to read, or that i find boring, just for the sake of keeping my post count up.

My hats off to all you fine folks who can put up so much content week in and week out and manage to keep it interesting, because for the life of me i can't figure out how the heck you do it.

Dude you know what? Whenever i come here to your blog i always find it funny and interesting. I do agree that you don't have to post everyday if you feel you have nothing to say. I find myself posting every 2-3 days. Certainly not everyday.

Thanks for the nice comment on my blog! People suck sometimes to tell me to get a life! I'm like yeah think about your life and then get back to me!!! UGH!!!

I never want to sound like a douche, even though I often do, but this might be my favorite slydesblog.com post yet!

I agree. Stay topical, no matter what your post stats say. I try to do it, especially lately.

I bust on you all the time, but this blog and you are the sole reasons why I blog, so I give you much props.

Mommy blogs are great. I love them, but this is not a daddy blog. Its a SLYDES blog. Keep at it.

And stop fucking with me. Thanks.

This is a great post. I think I just may have to stumble it. It's true some blogs get lumped into the mommyblog category very unfairly - these ones don't focus on only motherhood and what amazing word little Jimmy picked up today. If they do, they do it in a way that makes you want to read it, anyway and that is talent. Some people still use blogs like diaries which isn't so bad. I just don't tend to find any interest in reading someone else's To-Do lists, mundane daily activities, sob stories, viral email posts, or sarcastic rants. There are way too many of those and they either stress me out (I have my own To-Do lists) or they bore me (there is tons of sarcasm already out there and I get email too) so unless they are done very well or made very funny or interesting then I don't tend to read them. On the other hand, what is interesting to some is not always interesting to another person so there will always be some posts you aren't particularly fond of even by your favorite bloggers. Anyway, my point, believe it or not, is that you shouldn't feel pressure to post every day. I know bloggers who only post once a week or less and get great responses. I think you are good with a couple of times a week.

Even on the best blogs sometimes it gets pretty tiring to read 5-7 of their posts a week. Very few people in the world are THAT interesting. One particular blogger with daily posts once wrote just the words "salt water taffy" as a post. I suspect the egomaniac in them just wanted to gauge how much response they could elicit with so little effort. I stopped reading it when they got over 80 comments. Wanker...

I post when I think of stuff. Or when I am confused about soemthing. Or when I'm grumpy. Or when I am bored at work at lunchtime.

Apart from then, it's all topical top-notch stuff.

Heh.

Totally agree, post when YOU want to.... god forbid we get to hear what you had for breakfast every day! As for my drivel... beats me why people read it for sure... it's totally boring most of the time!

Today for breakfast I had a piece of toast with peanut butter and an assortment of vitamins.

You should ask before you quote me. That took me all freakin day to write.

my worst blog attempt ever (on a day when i had nothing to blog about) was that my toilet brush was missing... i even shocked myself by writing that piece of brilliance ... i learnt a valuable lesson that day :)

I'm feeling some kind of... I don't know, guilt maybe? I used to blog 5-6 times a day some days!

Keep posting the good stuff. I've been entertaining the office with your horny therapist story ;-)

I am worried now. I posted 10 times in 11 days which is almost everyday. And I may have posted once or twice about my son. And, um, a bike ride and something about food, which is kind of boring.

You just have to go with the flow - daily, weekly, monthly or whatever. Actually, not monthly because that is not often enough, neither is weekly. So really, two or three times a week is good, unless of course something of interest happens and then you could post daily.

Which is what you actually said, isn't it.

Ya know, maybe I should stick with your rules, and just post when there is something REALLY worth posting, instead of posting just to post, ya know? Either that, or I could post every single day just to talk dirty to ya!

Slyde said...

Bina: dirty talk is ALWAYS appreciated... of course, we should probably do that over a private chatroom, where i can take my pants off (i mean, speak openly!).

Ruby said...

i feel insulted..........you've said something to every single person that left a comment except me..........i think i shall go sulk now:(

Blogs are sort of evoluntionairy. What I write these days I could never have envisioned when I started back in 2004.

Posting every day is a waste unless you are really talented and have something to say. I read a bunch of blogs and I couldn't read them all if they posted something ever day. I look for insight and quality over volume.

My blog comes down to two catagories anymore. The ongoing theme (cinema, dipshits, POV) etc. that pretty much write themselves. These blogs are usually done in mass in advance than set to publish on a schedule. Then there are my introspective / recollection blogs that are the meat of my blog, but you will only see about 3 of those a month on average.

Slyde said...

lotus: i agree completely, and my blog has evolved into something very different from its inception as well.

Thanks for the compliment, I really appreciate that.
