Swingtown

This new show has been, without a doubt, my guilty little pleasure this Summer.

Right now, with Rescue Me (my usual Summer show) not returning until next year, Swingtown has the honor of being the only thing I have been turning my TV on for since May.

The show takes place in the Summer of 76, in an unnamed Chicago suburb, where a young on-the-rise couple have just moved in to a new upscale neighborhood, leaving their old, traditional friends behind.

The fun begins when their new neighbors, who are very much into the 70’s scene of drugs, parties, and open marriages, indoctrinate them (while high on Quaaludes) into the lifestyle at one of their out-of-control orgy/4th of July parties.

The show, while still fun, has never gotten so high on the “naughty-meter” as it had on that first episode, but I’m still having a hoot watching it. The show really took a hammering by the religious watch-dog groups for its content, and I fear that they have bowed down to company pressure and tamed the show back a bit.

And perhaps they’ve tamed it a wee too much. While the show debuted quite strongly, it has done worse and worse in the ratings every week since then. To add insult to injury, CBS just moved the show to Friday nights, which is pretty much, I fear, its death knell.

Which would be a shame. While it’s certainly not Shakespeare, and not even as good as my BFF TV show LOST, it’s still a fun ride. Swingtown originally was to be an HBO show, where I think it would have fared much better. They could have been as racy and as raunchy as they wanted, without having to worry about Proctor and Gamble pulling out their ad funding (which recently happened).

But CBS says it is committed to showing all 13 episodes, so I will have to contend myself with that.

Regardless, the show will continue to be my dirty little secret this Summer.

Is anyone else watching this?

Interesting side note: One of the best things about Swingtown is all the awesome 70’s music that they play throughout the show. CBS, being no dummy, knows this as well. During each show, they have a 3 minute commercial starring Peter Fonda where they are selling a 10 CD “Flower Power” collection through Time Life Books. They keep advertising it for $12.95!

I LOVE this music, and I finally had to bite. Smelling a rat, I called up last night to order it.

Sure enough, it was too good to be true. The 12.95 is the TRIAL PRICE. All that money gets you is the right to have the cd’s for 30 days before having the option of returning them. After that, Time Life charges you 5 monthly payments of 29.95 each!

Ouch! I think I needed a Quaalude to swallow that one down, myself…

I have not seen this show. Too bad because I'd probably like the music. I can't believe they are charging that much for the CDs. I'm glad you called and found out for us.

Holy Crap! That is a lot of freaking money, for songs you can down load from the internet! LOL

But no, I haven't watched much of any prime time TV. I usually watch BIO, Animal Planet, or the Ghost Hunters, Psychic Investigators and things like that, or just a movie.

I have to admit... I watched once. But it's on sooo late.

I think M. turned on the first show, but he got bored before any of the good stuff started. They're usually dead in the water when the networks start moving them around. All you can hope is that some cable channel will pick it up. Alas, my beloved Jericho suffered the same fate, and that was with 100k support letters and a loyal following! :( And, TimeLife is always a rip off; so, I search for them at my library and rip it to my computer.

I actually really wanted to watch that show, but my daughter was born in May, kind of kicking that plan to the curb - and then I just figured I'd missed too much of it and would be lost...
And I have considered purchasing those VERY cd's myself because every time the commercial is on I end up dancing around the apartment, however that is a ridiculous price!
Eeek! Thanks for the warning :)

Slyde said...

ali: Welcome! And yes, i start singing along with that commercial too, but i agree.. the price is ridiculous...

Never seen the show or heard of it! And yeah, as soon as they move a show to Friday nights it's over. I'm sure the music is fab though.

Thanks for your visit and comment yesterday. I had a painful experience donating blood one time. Not fun. I should blog about that sometime...might turn off everyone from ever considering donating though. :D

There isn't much drama on broadcast television that I am willing to watch these days. Since the Sopranos went off the air, it is a barren waste land (although Big Love is pretty damn good). Mostly I watch "Wipeout"..damn funny and fast moving reality show. Consider apply for that instead of Survivor.

Mostly I have been downloading a lot of documentaries from the internet, stuff that never makes it onto television, for good reason, we would all revolt in revolution if this information became mass knowledge.

cuz: summer is the one time i try to avoid the tv..

hiho: for me, its been almost 2 years since i donated, and i used to be a regular...

lotus: you like Big Love, huh? i gave it a shot in its first season and it just didnt do it for me..

At work we did a job for clients that had regular swinger's parties. We were doing a huge renovation - big pool, spa etc. The husband was getting annoyed that we got behind with the work as he had planned some big parties for summer. I could not talk to either of them without thinking OMG you do "that" on the weekend. Don't get me wrong - each to their own - but don't tell me 'cos I will just keep thinking about it.
But you know, they invited my boss - but never me (not sure if I was not a bit OFFENDED about that). My boss did decline.
